Is BMI Accurate? Its Limitations and Better Alternatives
BMI is the most widely used weight screening tool in the world, but it is also one of the most criticized. Is it actually accurate? The honest answer: it is useful for populations, but limited for individuals.
What BMI does well
BMI (weight in kg divided by height in metres squared) is cheap, fast, and correlates reasonably well with body fat across large groups. For most average adults it gives a fair first-pass estimate of whether weight may pose a health risk. Check yours with the BMI Calculator.
Where BMI falls short
- It cannot tell muscle from fat - muscular athletes often read as "overweight".
- It ignores fat distribution - belly fat is riskier than hip fat at the same BMI.
- It is less accurate for older adults, who lose muscle and gain fat at a stable BMI.
- Standard cut-offs underestimate risk in people of Asian descent, who use lower thresholds.
- It is not valid for children, pregnancy, or some groups without adjustment.
Better (or complementary) measurements
No single number is perfect. Combine BMI with measures of body composition and fat distribution:
