BMI is the most widely used weight screening tool in the world, but it is also one of the most criticized. Is it actually accurate? The honest answer: it is useful for populations, but limited for individuals.

What BMI does well

  • It cannot tell muscle from fat - muscular athletes often read as "overweight".
